چکیده

We examine the structure of cool magnetic spots in the photospheres of evolved stars, specifically asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. We find that the photosphere of a cool magnetic spot will be above the surrounding photosphere of AGB stars, opposite to the situation in the sun. This results from the behavior of the opacity, which increases with decreasing temperature, opposite to the behavior of the opacity near the effective temperature of the sun. We analyze the formation of dust above the cool magnetic spots, and suggest that the dust formation is facilitated by strong shocks, driven by stellar pulsations, which run through and around the spots. The presence of both the magnetic field and cooler temperatures make dust formation easier as the shock passes above the spot. We review some observations supporting the proposed mechanism, and suggest further observations to check the model. stars: RCB − circumstellar matter – 2 –

I propose a mechanism for axisymmetrical mass loss on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), that may account for the axially symmetric structure of elliptical planetary nebulae. The proposed model operates for slowly rotating AGB stars, having angular velocities in the range of 10ωKep <∼ ω <∼ 10 ωKep, where ωKep is the equatorial Keplerian angular velocity. Such angular velocities could be gained ...

The Transition to Axisymmetrical Mass Loss

Any model for the formation of elliptical planetary nebulae (PNs) should account for the positive correlation between the mass loss rate and the degree of departure from sphericity of the AGB progenitor's wind. I propose that this correlation results from dust formation above magnetic cool spots. The model deals with elliptical PNs, but not with bipolar PNs. The basic assumption is that a weak ...

Dust Formation and Inhomogeneous Mass Loss from Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars

We examine the flow from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars when along a small solid angle the optical depth due to dust is very large. We consider two types of flows. In the first, small cool spots are formed on the surface of slowly rotating AGB stars. Large quantities of dust are expected to be formed above the surface of these cool spots. We propose that if the dust formation occurs during...

Solar-like Cycle in Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars

I propose that the mechanism behind the formation of concentric semi-periodic shells found in several planetary nebulae (PNs) and proto-PNs, and around one asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star, is a solar-like magnetic activity cycle in the progenitor AGB stars. The time intervals between consecutive ejection events is ∼ 200 − 1, 000 yrs, which is assumed to be the cycle period (the full magnetic...

After reviewing the difficulties faced by the conventional theory of planet formation (based upon the aggregation of microscopic dust particles), we describe an alternative hypothesis. We propose that planets form by gravitational collapse at the same time as the star about which they orbit. This concurrent collapse hypothesis avoids theoretical difficulties associated with the conventional mod...
